‘Wow!’ Omar exclaimed. ‘That’ll be cool.’

Personally, I didn’t see what was so cool about it. Apart from the odd bark, most of my acting never stretched my vocal range anyway. As a mainly white dog with just a few patches of brown, I was accustomed to a monochrome existence.

The director also told us that his movie was to be filmed at several historic locations in and around Los Angeles, as a homage to the silent-movie era. ‘If Uggie is chosen, he’ll feature in almost every frame,’ added Monsieur H. We were excited, but neither of us expected that much from the picture to begin with, to be honest.

‘It’s the kind of thing that’ll probably only be shown in Europe or go straight to DVD,’ I heard Omar telling Mercy afterwards. ‘We’ll have to ask for a tape or we may never get to see it.’

Little did he know.
